December 31st, 2018

From 2018 to 2019.

It's a new year on the Gregorian calendar. I've always found it a bit confusing that the calendar used in the Western world is called 'Gregorian' while the Eastern calendar is called 'Julian' - since Gregory is a Greek name and Julius, of course, is Roman, and the part of my brain that obsesses over language histories thinks it should be the other way around. But that's how it played out historically, thanks to Pope Gregory XIII.

I spent the first half of the calendar year working for an eccentric old man in the hills outside of Scappoose, and getting paid whenever he managed to make his payroll. It was an interesting experience but a financial disaster for me, and I managed to get a real job at the beginning of July. Since then I've been getting reconnected with the real world, and finally moved out of The Undisclosed Location and into a place in Hillsboro where I discovered I'm neighbors with galadrion.

Thanksgiving weekend brought loss; Bunny's mother, Georgianne, was admitted to the emergency room in California and did not survive. Georgianne had come into my life exactly 12 years earlier, the Thanksgiving weekend of 2006. Bunny has now been taken in by her godparents in San Francisco and will be starting the new year in her old school there - reputed to be one of the best in the city.

I'm still working at the same job and got an extension of my contract through January, so the new calendar year of 2019 promises to be more prosperous than the last.

Happy New Year - or Sylvester, as the festival is sometimes called - and if you celebrate, have a safe and enjoyable one.
