Nigeria: Buhari wins presidency. Muhammadu Buhari emerged the winner in last weekend's presidential elections in Nigeria, unseating the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan. Jonathan's party, the PDP, has said it will challenge the results, but Jonathan himself has already conceded. Security was a key issue in the election, with Nigerians frustrated by Jonathan's apparent inability to end the atrocities of Boko Haram in the northeast of the country. Debka:
Buhari ruled the country with an iron fist in his brief rule in the 1980s. He now says he is a belated convert to democracy. Buhari campaigned on a pledge to stamp out the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency in the north, carrying the electorate on his security ticket.

Iraq: Iraqi forces make gains in Tikrit. Rudaw reports that 'The Iraqi Federal Police said more than 150 Islamic State fighters have been killed in the ongoing liberation of Tikrit and all of the militants' bases and facilities in the city have been captured. ...' Security forces said the month-long operation would need another 24 hours to finish securing the city.

Kurdistan: Netherlands to assist Iraqi forces and Peshmerga. Also from Rudaw: 'The Dutch government has announced plans to send at least six F-16 aircraft and nearly 400 military personnel to Iraq to help "break the fighting power of the ISIS terrorist organisation," a statement of the Netherlands Ministry of Defense said.'

Israel / USA: Boehner meets Netanyahu in Jerusalem. Arutz Sheva: 'One month since his controversial address to the US Congress, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu hosted the man who invited him to speak - Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner (R-OH) - at his Jerusalem office Wednesday.'

Iran: Destruction of Israel "nonnegotiable". Times of Israel: 'The commander of the Basij militia of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said that “erasing Israel off the map” is “nonnegotiable,” according to an Israel Radio report Tuesday.' Mohammed Reza Naqdi also threatened Saudi Arabia. The comments came as Iran and six world powers prepared to announce a new phase in nuclear negotiations.
