Shabbat / Shavu'ot / Memorial Day

Friday night I was invited to spend Sabbath eve with a longtime Facebook friend whom I'd never met in person but who's soon to be a neighbor. Benjamin and I are both active in the local Jewish community but somehow never managed to meet in person. When I moved back to Portland early last year (after having spent 2007 to 2013 "in exile" in San Francisco) we connected over FB, and finally got to hang out together this weekend. He and Iris have five kids, of whom four were with us Friday night, and they're all rambunctious and delightful. They live in the neighborhood where I'm moving next month, so I'll get to see them more often.

Sunday was the holiday of Shavu'ot - like everything in the Jewish calendar, it begins at nightfall, so the holiday actually started Saturday night. There's a custom to stay up all night studying religious texts but I've never been a big fan of that, so I stayed home and went to bed early.

Today was another quiet day for me - mostly catching up on reading, but I took a few moments to remember those of my buddies and many others who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country. Snyder, Schroeder, Walker, Cotto, and the rest, you will never be forgotten.
