Working my way through Toni Morrison's second novel, Sula; will do a write-up when I'm finished. I'm sort of looking forward to the challenge of this one because 'Sula' is the one TM novel I've never really cared for - too much angst, betrayal, people setting each other on fire, and so on. But I want to give it a good close reading on this go-round so that I can get a clear idea of the book's strengths and weaknesses, and how it fits into TM's work overall.
I finished the third module of the semiconductor course I've been taking online from UC Berkeley. The first two were basic EE stuff - solving resistor networks, LC networks, and the frequency response of op-amp circuits. (You put a capacitor and resistor in the negative feedback loop to make a low-pass filter.) The module I just finished covers the physics of semiconductors - doping and carrier concentration, the diode equation, and temperature vs. I/V response. (If you look at only the exponential term of the diode equation, it looks like resistance should go up when temperature increases, but the opposite happens, because more electrons are jumping from valence to conduction band and the carrier concentration goes up. That's why you have to watch out for thermal runaway, and that's why engineers spend sleepless nights figuring out ways to keep computers from overheating.)
Still no word on the art school gig! If I don't hear from them tomorrow, I'll call and follow up.
