I have it on good authority (mine) that punched cards were used as late as the mid-1980s in US Air Force communications centers, as was punched tape. By the late 80s, AFCC was using an early prototype optical character reader; it was the size of a refrigerator, scanned the document with a red laser beam, and required that the text be printed using a special OCR-readable font - which meant using a special typewriter ball on your IBM Selectric. But that's a tale for another day.
