Freedom from Illusion

Torah was probably humankind's first code of mental discipline: all the prohibitions against idolatry were meant keeping your brain free of shmutz so you could experience the clear, pure consciousness of G-d's reality. We don't experience the temptation for idolatry in the same way today (see Julian Jaynes), but the principle still applies. The commandments to know and to love the Creator are cardinal precepts. And it's just a good habit to practice mindfulness at all times, and to guard against bad habits such as brooding, obsessing, and self-delusion.
