I was working intermittently during this time, and gradually transitioning from office services and document copying/scanning to the IT field. By the end of the year, I had committed to working in IT while studying engineering. Since then, I've had to put the engineering program on the back burner, but I'm still moving forward in the IT field.
Sometimes we have to experience some real discomfort before we make the changes we need to make. For me, one of those changes was learning - finally - to start planning my life ahead; that is, making longer-range plans for more than just the immediate future. For most of my adult life I had been taking care of immediate needs (which is important) and thinking about the question "Where do I want to be in 5 or 10 years?"
It was being stuck in that relationship with G - whom I loved dearly, but who was impossible to live with - that forced me to change my mode of thinking and living.
